General Interest and Great Reads (back to the main book review page)
What's Worth Knowing by Wendy Lustbader This is a wise
and lovely book, with the learnings, regrets, joys, and wisdom of over one
hundred elderly men and women who look back over their decades of life
experience, and offer us what they believe is truly worth knowing. For those of
us who might have a good portion of our lives ahead of us, it is worthwhile to
read what these elders might have to teach us. I personally enjoyed the fact
that autobiographical information accompanied the vignettes, as it helps me
place their wisdom into an illuminating perspective. Till We Have Faces : A Myth Retold by C.S. Lewis A number of readers consider this to be their favorite piece of fiction. It is magical retelling of the myth of Psyche and Cupid, a myth exists in various forms in different cultures. It is a psychological drama, a “moral tale” that does not dead-end into mere moralizing. The tale is told from the viewpoint of the “evil sister”, who coerced Psyche into betraying Cupid. You will find yourself identifying with the “evil sister’s” sheer humanity, and may find yourself growing and evolving along with her as you read the book. This is a must-read.
Sister Wendy's 1000 Masterpieces by Sister Wendy Beckett, Patricia Wright If you have every had any interest in looking at art, if you have ever enjoyed looking at a drawing or painting, and if you have not yet enjoyed this absolutely wonderful book, then you need to hurry to your library or bookstore and check it out! I collect art books, but this is my favorite. This beautiful work cannot be adequately described. Sister Wendy's descriptions and histories are as lovely as the works of art themselves. It is nice to simply dip into now and then, when you have a few spare moments to relax. The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down : A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures by Anne Fadiman This is not a "feel good" type of book. It is, however, a fascinating, enlightening, and engrossing tragedy of how bright, well-intended individuals from different cultures can misunderstand and mis-communicate to an almost unthinkable extent. If you have any interest in cultural awareness, then this should be on your to-read list.
Becoming Attached : First Relationships and How They Shape Our Capacity to Love by Robert Karen Ph.D.
What sort of book is this? I loaned this book to a friend, and didn't see it again for over a year. It wasn't lying forgotten in someone's stack of books; it was actively being loaned from person to person. This is an incredible book. It manages to be both scholarly and accessible. It uses narrative, biography and history in a fascinating manner. It enlightens and informs without being tedious or dull. If you have any interest in the relationships children have (or that you or your loved ones had) with their early caregivers, and how those relationships can be disrupted, and what the long-term results are, then you might want to consider this excellent book. Fear No Evil by Natan Sharansky This has been called one of the essential books of the twentieth century. It is an incredible book on many levels, as an autobiographical account of a political prisoner in Russia, as a piece of compelling modern history, as a spiritual journey. One of the most amazing aspects of this narrative is the unfolding fact that one can be truly free in any situation, if one chooses to be. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. High Probability Selling : Re-Invents The Selling Process By Jacques Werth If you are in business, you know that your products and services need to be visible to those who need them. That is the heart of marketing. Yet is respectful, high-integrity, no-pressure, no-persuading marketing and selling possible? This book answers the question with a resounding “yes”. This book is a breath of fresh air for those of us who need to market but hate to sell. Jump back to the main book review categories
