At a Journal Workshop : Writing to Access the Power of the Unconscious and Evoke Creative Ability (Inner Workbook) by Ira Progoff

This is the seminal work on journaling. In my opinion it contains some of the best, and most powerful, material written on the subject. It is not written in an engaging manner; I have personally found it the most difficult-to-read book on the subject of personal writing. However, tackling even part of it is well worth it. You will be rewarded for your efforts.

The Way in: Journal Writing for Self-Discovery by Rita D. Jacobs

Whether you have journaled for years, or are only thinking about it; The Way In may take you farther in your journaling practice than you thought you could go. It is considered by many to be an indispensable journaling resource. It is especially recommended for beginners; not because it is basic but because it will get you writing.

Life's Companion : Journal Writing As a Spiritual Quest by Christina Baldwin

This is an excellent resource to dip into for inspiration and writing exercises. It has been one of my favorites for years.

A Year in the Life : Journaling for Self-Discovery by Sheila Bender

Would you like a focus on writing for writing's sake, and a book packed full of writing practice suggestions? Although there is a definite self-discovery element here, this is a great book for those who want to focus on the art of writing. There are numerous practice suggestions, enough to keep you busy for awhile.

List Your Self : Listmaking As the Way to Self-Discovery by Ilene Segalove, Paul Bob Velick, Paul Bob Segalove

Are you out of ideas on what to write about? Read this book, and you may never run out of ideas again. These suggestions run the gamut from soul-searching to comical, and are a great anecdote to journal writer's block.

The Creative Journal : The Art of Finding Yourself by Lucia Cappachione

The Creative Journal takes the written journal one step further. Have you ever thought of the many other mediums you could play with and explore in journaling? It is truly a wonderful idea, since your journal is a private expression, and should be off limits to even your inner critic. Try out the wonderful ideas in this book, and you may well achieve a greater degree of self-awareness (and fun).
